PRITHAM K. CHAKRAVARTHY

PROFESSOR OF SCREENWRITING

Pritham K Chakravarthy is a writer, translator, independent researcher, playwright, director, performer, film critic and activist from Chennai. She graduated in Bachelor of Commerce from the Madras Christian College, Tambaram. She has extensive experience in the theatre over the last four decades. Her well known performances include: Meendum Meendum, Surya Mukam and her own solo piece about Aravanis (The Transgender community), Nirvanam (2000-2010).

The script and performance for this one woman show by Pritham Chakravarthy was evolved after six months of research and recorded interviews with members of the Hijra (transgender) community. This production has toured India and the USA under a Fulbright Fellowship and was performed at the Hub in Edinburgh International Festival (2002). Pritham Chakravarthy appeared in Mirror – at Prakirthi Foundation, a solo one woman narrative written by Venkatesh Chakravarthy (2003); and Vellavi – at The Other Festival. (2003).

She then featured in Orientations, a theatre production by Border Crossings, which opened in London in October 2003. Her research experience includes a year as Research Associate, Reproductive Rights in early 20th Century, Director, Dr Sarah Hodges, Warwick University, UK (2003-04); Research Associate, Politics of Temple Entry, Director, Dr. Anupama Rao, Barnard College, Columbia University (2003); Research Associate for Continuing Unity – Nation and State, Directors Milton Israel and Dipankar Gupta; University of Toronto (2000- 2002).

For the Media South Asia Project, she conducted surveys and interviews on responses to the satellite media in Tamilnadu. Apart from writing articles and essays in little magazines and the mainstream press in Tamil and English; she is a professional translator who has many books to her credit in English such as the Tamil Pulp Fiction Anthology, Volume I& II, a compilation of many stories by a variety of Tamil authors for Blaft Publications; Where are You going Monkeys? – Folk tales by Ki. Rajnarayan, Blaft Publications; Gopalapuram, a novel by Ki. Rajnarayan, Penguin India; The Taming of Women by Sivakami, Penguin India and The Final Solitude by S. Ramakrishnan. She is an experienced television, film and documentary script-writer. She teaches Screenwriting at the Ramanaidu Film School.

Recently, her performance in director Mysskin’s Psycho (2020) has become quite a rage in Tamil Nadu. Apart from screenwriting she also teaches contemporary techniques in film acting at RFS.
