CONTEST FOR SHORT FILMMAKERS 2017

RFS announces this contest in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee, Padma Bhushan Dr. Daggubati Ramanaidu. The core objective of this short film contest is to encourage budding talent and to showcase the best short films of these young creative film-makers to the film industry.

Rs. 1,00,000/- for 1st Best Short Film

Rs. 50,000/- for 2nd Best Short Film

Eligibility: Entries are invited online from budding screenwriters, directors, cinematographers, working professionals and students of any academy.

THE WORKSHOP

A FREE WORKSHOP will be conducted for selected participants at Ramanaidu Film School.  The objective of the 6-day workshop is to give individual theoretical inputs to screenwriters, directors, and cinematographers in the morning sessions and combined film making insights couple with guest lectures & Industry Interactions in the afternoon sessions.

After the workshop, the students will form teams as screenwriter-director-cinematographer and make short films that will be sponsored by Ramanaidu Film School.

In addition to the best short film and the second best short film, awards will also be given in the following categories.

o   ScreenWriting         –        1st prize – Rs.25,000/-           2nd  prize – Rs. 15,000/-

o   Direction                  –        1st prize – Rs.25,000/-           2nd  prize – Rs. 15,000/-

o   Cinematography     –        1st prize – Rs.25,000/-           2nd  prize – Rs. 15,000/-

Apart from the above Rs. 10,000/- will be awarded for the first submission of a short film within the deadline and maintaining quality guidelines.

The films produced during the contest can only be uploaded after a month of the completion of the contest and that too with the credits given to Ramanaidu Film School.

A contestant can only apply for one specializations out of screenwriting / direction / cinematography. The copyrights of the films, exclusively rest with Ramanaidu Film School. for the first one month.

Presentation Ceremony: Awards will be presented on 6th June, 2017 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shri. Daggubati Ramanaidu.

SCRIPTWRITING

24Hrs Contest Description

Use the characters below and create a short story:

A school child
A cancer patient who is recovering
Two policemen
An actress

You can add two more characters (if needed) to develop the story.

 When you write your story, use: 

  1. The simple past tense, past continuous tense and past perfect tense.
  2. Adjectives and adverbs.
  3. Direct speech with reporting verbs and punctuations.
  4. Discourse markers eg: then, after that, or in the end.

Note: – For “ SCREEN WRITING” aspirants, Submit the final script in the form of a .doc or CELTX format and upload the same in GOOGLE DRIVE and share the same with us within the stipulated time (24 Hours).

 

Contest Details
  • Based on the application, selected candidates will receive an email with a topic outline on Thursday, 20th April, 2017 on which they need to write a story and submit within 24 hours from the receipt of the email. (Submission link activates at 10:00 am on the said date with a countdown timer) (if there is any evidence of plagiarism, the contestant will be barred)
  • Based on the story submission, a panel of members will select candidates for the WORKSHOP. They will be intimated on Monday, 24th of April 2017.
  • Selected candidates need to attend a week long SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP by experienced professors and industry professionals from 1st to 6th May, 2017 at “Ramanaidu Film School”, Ramanaidu Studios Campus, Film Nagar, Hyderabad. Candidates have to make their own arrangements for travel, lodging & boarding.
  • After the workshop, participants will have to team up with other contestants from direction and cinematography and submit the proposed short film script.
  • Selected scripts will be given an approval to be made into a short film that is required to be submitted on or before Wednesday, 31st May, 2017. Upon successful completion of the above said short film as per the acceptable guidelines, teams will be given an amount of Rs. 5,000/-, as a token of appreciation.
  • The best screenwriter will receive an award of appreciation along with a cash prize of Rs.25,000/- and the 2nd best screenwriter will receive an award of appreciation along with a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/- on 6th June, 2017 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shri Daggubati Ramanaidu.
Selection Guidelines
  • The contest is open for online submissions only.
  • Submissions received after the last date will not be entertained.
  • The Screenwriters should have a story / screen / article credited to them on any web platform
  • Cover page should include the TITLE only. Remove any contact information (name, email address, etc.) on the script.
  • Co-writers are allowed but, only one writer needs to register.
  • The short films that you are mentioning along with application should have been shot and uploaded on or before 31st March, 2017.
  • Scripts / Short films that have won previous awards may also be submitted again.
  • Scripts / Photos that portray or otherwise include inappropriate and/or offensive content, including nudity, violence, human rights and/or environmental violation, and/or any other contents deemed to be contrary to the law, religious, cultural and moral traditions and practices of India, are strictly prohibited and will be immediately discarded.
  • A participant who submits any such photos may be barred.

DIRECTION

24Hrs Contest Description

A man comes out of his office in the evening and walks to the two wheeler parking area.  While starting his bike he notices a costly mobile phone lying on the ground near his bike. He picks it up and checks to see if it is working. He looks around to see if someone has dropped it. He carefully keeps the phone in his bag and starts his bike. Suddenly the phone begins to ring.

With a start he stops the engine and takes the phone out of his bag. He looks around, reluctant to answer the phone. He waits till the ringing stops and again checks the parking lot. After confirming that nobody is around, he opens the back cover of the phone, removes the SIM Card, and throws it away. He keeps the phone back into the bag. Satisfying himself that nobody is around, he starts his bike again. Suddenly he hears a voice saying, “excuse me”. With a start he looks back and sees a good looking girl looking angrily at him.

Shoot this scene, giving it an appropriate ending

Note: For “Direction” aspirants, your supervision, shot, look-up and overall executions are important. You can use any device (mobile, DSLR, or any High-End cam, within your possibilities) for shooting purposes. In this quality also plays a certain amount of criterion factor, but not the “judging factor”. You have to upload the final content to YouTube or any Video Streaming services and share the link with us within the stipulated time (24 Hours).

  • The entry should be submitted by the participant who may be the rights holder of the film or the person authorised to participate in the contest and accept the terms and conditions. For the purposes of this contest and subsequent distribution of the participating film, the Participant hereby confirms that he/she has the necessary rights to submit the entry and accept the terms.
  • Only one person who submits the entry will be considered as the “Participant”. All communications from our end as well as the benefits will accrue only to the Participant.
  • Transfer, assignment or substitution of the prizes / benefits to a person other than the participants, will not be permitted. However, in exceptional cases the organisers reserve the right to entertain such request at their discretion.
  • The participants agree that the organisers shall not be held responsible for any unauthorised use of the content by any third party and Ramanaidu Film School does not guarantee the posting of any content.
  • The decision of the jury shall be final, unquestionable and binding on all participants.
  • To avail the prizes, the winners:
  • Must possess a valid Identity Card; (Govt. recognized)o Must adhere to all the rules, regulations and terms as applicable.o Once submitted, the entries cannot be withdrawn for any reason whatsoever.
  • Ramanaidu Film School may reject any film without assigning any reason whatsoever and the same cannot be challenged.o All materials, documents, etc. submitted for participation shall not be returned under any circumstances and shall become the property of Ramanaidu Film School.
  • The scheduling, timetable and screening of the winners’ films shall be at the discretion of the contest organizers.o The organizers reserve the right to modify the terms and conditions of the contest without any intimation to the participants at any time after the launch of the contest.
  • Entry and participation of films implies unconditional acceptance of these terms and regulations.
  • Ramanaidu Film School decision in all matters pertaining to this contest and screening terms herein shall be final and binding in all respects.
  • RIGHT TO SCREEN: The participants grants the organisers (Ramanaidu Film School and Suresh Productions) the non-exclusive rights to screen their short films on their respective websites.
  • COPYRIGHT: The Film must not contain any copyrighted work(s) belonging to third parties unless (1) Participants have a license to use such works in the Film; or (2) the use participants’ Film makes of such works is a fair one under the copyright laws. Participants will retain any licenses and provide them to organisers upon request.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it alright, if the story that I have uploaded is in a regional language?

Any script or link in regional language, it should be translated either into English, Hindi, Telugu or Tamil.

The short film whose link I will submit along with the application is in a language other than English and Hindi. Will it be accepted?

Subtitles should be either in English or Hindi will be appreciated though not mandatory.

Will the submission of the online application guarantee my participation in the contest?

No. A panel of experts will scrutinize all the applications. They will also watch the films submitted by all applicants, based on the merit of which contestants will be short-listed for the second level of entrance test

What is this second level of entrance test?

Short-listed applicants in the first phase for screenwriting will be given a topic outline through e-mail. They will have to develop a story on the given outline and mail it to us within 24 hours.

Short-listed applicants in the first phase for direction will be given a scene description through e-mail. They will have to shoot the scene using any camera, edit it and upload the scene within 24 hours. They will have to provide us the link to the video.

Who is eligible for the workshop?

After reading the stories and watching the video clips uploaded during the second level of entrance test the panel of experts will short-list the contestants to be invited for the workshop.

What will be the nature of the workshop?

The workshop will be conducted for six days, from 1st May to 6th May. Basic specialised inputs will be given to screenwriters, directors and cinematographers respectively during the morning sessions. Guest lectures, screenings and broader aspects of filmmaking, common to all, will constitute the afternoon sessions

When does the actual contest start?

The contest starts from the time it is announced. You must be referring to when is it that you will commence making the final short film. This process will start after the workshop.

Will the best film prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- and the 2nd best film prize of Rs 50,000/- have to be shared between the screenwriter, director and cinematographer?

Will the organizers help in getting actors for the short film?

Sure!

Will the prize money be given after tax deductions?
