Tilakar is a graduate in Direction & Screenwriting from the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu who worked with legendary director like Bharathi Raja and Bhakyaraj. Initially it is with the latter he worked in four Tamil films  such as Thooral Ninnuppochu, Darling Darling Darling, Munthaanai Mudichu, Thaavani Kanavugal and his lone but big Hindi box office hit Aakree Raasta, a Amitabh Bachchan feature.
